Travel diary, 1830 July 1.

The 42-page manuscript of Henry Carre Tucker contains daily entries made during his trip to France together with his father and uncle, from 2 to 27 June 1830. His comments about the places they visit on their way to Paris and back are interspersed with appropriate verses from Byron, as if he were following the same itinerary as the poet. In Paris the Tuckers were contacted by Admiral Bergert, who took care of them throughout their sojourn there. They visit all the tourist landmarks, go to theaters, restaurants and famous cafeĢs, and young Tucker orders a hat and trousers from the Admiral's tailor. His impressions are often expressed with dry humor in short remarks, such as "the dinner, 1/2 French 1/2 English, had the defects of both." A topographical drawing in pencil of Dunkirk seen from the sea is pasted under the entry of June 5th.
